After our 33 hour trip from our front door to the door of our guesthouse we were pretty tired but forced ourselves to stay up so that we could acclimate to the time zone.
Bangkok is hot, but surprisingly not that much warmer than new orleans in august. yesterday we went to the vietnamese embassy to get our entrance visas (which were a lot more expensive than anticipated) and walked for several hours around the city. we ate lunch at a very small place that served either crispy fried pork over rice with a brown sauce or crispy fried pork noodle soup. we chose the pork over rice - delicious! it must have been a neighborhood speciaty because the place was packed.
Once we got back to the guesthouse we were in dire need of a swim and met two doctors (american and australian) working for an NGO trying to get into myanmar (burma) to help cyclone victims. the doctor from los angeles said that it was much easier for him to help victims of the asian tsunami in 2004 and the pakistani earthquake in 2005 than it was for him to get into new orleans after katrina... they have a group of five doctors that will enter into Myanmar today.

we're taking the train to chumpon, thailand in the southern peninsula of the country and take the boat tomorrow morning to the island. it's been six years since we've been to this island and we are ready to relax on a private beach for about eight days before we head back to the city.
more soon...
Love,
Steph
