We are safely in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and are loving it. We were happy to spend some time in Hanoi, but it was easy to leave.
In many Asian cities there are several neighborhoods for different products: motorcycle seat covers, woks, air conditioners, plates, silverwear... etc. In Hanoi our hotel was right in the underwear section. Padded bras, underwear, briefs, you name it - and it was within a 5 minute walk from our hotel. One day I noticed this strange looking pair of underwear with padding on the butt. It took me a minute to figure out that Vietnamese women buy padded underwear to make themselves look more curvy... I was familiar with the padded bra - but padded ass?
They came in three sizes: small, medium and large (but they do not compare to our sizes at all). I don't imagine we have this problem in the States... but it was hilarious. Tom's camera kept giving an error message so I couldn't take a photo. The phrase "Baby's got back" now takes on an entirely new meaning.
Apart from that - we learned that the Vietnamese food we love from New Orleans is from South Vietnam. It makes complete sense, since most of the Vietnamese people in the US are refugees from the war. Northern Vietnam has a different type of food - and it's not quite as good. We were able to eat a type of fried fish in dill, green onions and served with roasted peanuts, chillis, lemon, and cold noodles that was absolutely delicious! Apart from that - I was craving the dishes from Pho Tao Bay at home. I was finally able to get a Southern style BBQ pork at the airport in Hanoi - and it was delicious!
Cambodia seems to have all the charm that was absent from Hanoi - and the food is totally different. Don't want to bore you with all of the details, but if you're interested - let me know. One of the funnest things for me and travel is eating... which is another reason why we are excited to be in a new country and eating different things.
